MCCo Energy Audit and Utility Assessment Project

September 29, 2011

A primary emphasis of the demand-side management program has been to develop an effective energy assessment for MCCo and member facilities. MCCo’s energy audit program for members will provide the framework to inform, meet, and advance their respective Energy Management goals. It is critical for MCCo and all member institutions to have an accurate understanding of our energy footprints and available energy conservation measures to reduce total energy consumption and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. An energy audit will accomplish this by identifying investment grade efficiency projects and opportunities for retro-commissioning.

In fall of 2011, MCCo selected URS (Cleveland Office) through a competitive process to assist in performing technical energy audit and utility assessment services for facilities served by MCCo. A project kick-off meeting was held with MCCo, URS, and all facility operators and owners on November 1. The audit service will result in the comprehensive identification and evaluation of cost effective and environmentally responsible energy, water and sewer cost reduction measures in addition to renewable energy opportunities for each member institution.

The ASHREA level II energy audits will consider advancements in energy modeling, facility system technology, renewable energy options, and Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. Final energy audit reports are anticipated for the second quarter of 2012. MCCo and each member institution will receive an individual report. MCCo will also receive a comprehensive energy audit report for the entire system.

Recommended energy saving projects presented in the energy audit reports could help inform a customized demand-side program approach for each customer. In addition, the energy audit recommendations will create a road map for ways to reduce energy demand on the Central Plant and conserve energy resources. MCCo and our member institutions are committed to corporate environmental responsibility.
